BP brings new well online to produce oil from deep reservoirs at ACG

NOVEMBER 04, 2026

BP, the operator of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) block, has brought a new production well online to develop oil reserves located in deeper reservoirs.

The well was drilled from the Deepwater Gunashli platform and is designed to target oil reserves in reservoirs containing free gas.

According to the company, the production well targeting oil reserves in these reservoirs was brought online as planned at the end of the third quarter of 2026. The well is also expected to provide additional appraisal data to help assess the potential for future development of these reservoirs.

The company has not disclosed the well’s depth or production rate.

BP also continues to produce free gas from the Girmaki Altı Sandy reservoir through its first gas production well, drilled in 2025.

That well targets two priority reservoir complexes located below the oil fields currently under development: the relatively shallower Girmaki Üstü Sandy and the deeper Girmaki Altı Sandy formations. Drilling confirmed the presence of gas reserves in the first reservoir complex, while high-pressure gas was encountered in the second.

Gas and condensate produced from the well are transported to the Sangachal Terminal using the existing ACG infrastructure. Testing of the well and reservoirs is continuing alongside initial production.

Commercial production of free gas at ACG began in the first half of 2026.
