The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) and Türkiye Petrolleri Anonim Ortaklığı (TPAO) are working on developing new projects in Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and third countries, Report informs, citing Türkiye's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar at the 5th Azerbaijan‑Türkiye Energy Forum in Baku.
According to the minister, a review of bilateral cooperation shows that a partnership which previously focused on natural gas and oil has entered a phase of transformation towards electricity in recent years.
"Of course, our cooperation in the oil and natural gas sector continues to grow. Truly historic work has been done in this area. Türkiye, together with Azerbaijan, currently plays an extremely important role in ensuring Europe's supply security. Whether it is our joint cooperation in production fields, our exploration and production projects, the projects developed by SOCAR and TPAO, or the long‑term supply contracts signed between BOTAŞ and SOCAR – especially the Baku‑Tbilisi‑Ceyhan oil pipeline, TANAP, and the Baku‑Tbilisi‑Erzurum pipeline in terms of connectivity – all of these are projects of enormous significance.
In the current discussions, how can we bring our existing energy infrastructure to full capacity? How can we achieve the 1 million barrel throughput capacity of Baku‑Tbilisi‑Ceyhan? In this context, we are talking about connective projects that will unite the Turkic world, whether in electricity or other areas. Making maximum use of our existing infrastructure remains one of our main priorities."
Bayraktar added that discussions are also under way on exploration projects to be carried out by SOCAR and TPAO both in Türkiye and Azerbaijan – starting with the Shafag‑Asiman project last year and continuing with the Karabakh project – as well as joint exploration projects SOCAR will implement in Türkiye and third countries. "We will also put forward conceptual projects in these areas."
