German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that Azerbaijan is regarded as an important partner for Germany in strengthening its energy security.
According to Report's correspondent on assignment in Berlin, he made these remarks during a joint press conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
According to the Chancellor, Germany intends to expand cooperation with Azerbaijan in the coming years, particularly in the field of energy efficiency.
"We are interested in diversifying our import sources, especially natural gas supplies. Azerbaijan is among the countries that produce more energy than they consume. That is why Azerbaijan is an important, reliable and promising partner for Germany when it comes to ensuring our energy supply," Merz stressed.
He noted that after Germany stopped importing gas from Russia about four and a half years ago, it began searching for alternative sources of supply, with Azerbaijan playing an important role in this process.
"This cooperation creates new economic opportunities for both sides. We are also developing other supply routes, but today I would like to thank President Ilham Aliyev for the opportunity to discuss the prospects of increasing gas supplies from Azerbaijan. This issue is part of our mutual agreements and will remain one of the key topics of our future negotiations," the German Chancellor added.
