Slovak President: Azerbaijan is one of Bratislava’s main partners in gas supply

JULY 17, 2026

Slovakia considers Azerbaijan a strategic partner in the field of gas supply.

According to Report, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini said in an interview with AnewZ TV that during the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the subsequent energy crisis, Azerbaijan offered Bratislava opportunities for natural gas supplies through various routes.

The President noted that Baku had offered Slovakia part of the available capacity for gas transportation both via the TurkStream pipeline and through alternative routes passing through Bulgaria and Italy and extending to Austria. According to him, Slovakia has already purchased gas from Azerbaijan and is currently working on long-term solutions to secure gas supplies to Central Europe.

Pellegrini emphasized that in light of the European Union’s plans to stop purchasing Russian gas after 2027, Slovakia is seeking to diversify its energy sources, and Azerbaijan is regarded as one of the key players in this process.

The Slovak President also stated that relations between Baku and Bratislava are based on the principles of equal partnership. He noted that Slovakia views Azerbaijan not merely as a market, but as a reliable partner for mutually beneficial cooperation.

According to him, this cooperation also extends to the defense industry. The parties have discussed a joint project for the production of new military equipment, and in the future these products are expected to enter other markets through Azerbaijan.

It was also recalled that earlier reports indicated that Slovakia plans to purchase approximately 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Azerbaijan after 2027.
