Baku is not only one of the principal centers where the global oil industry was formed, but also a city where a number of important innovations and pioneering initiatives in the history of the world oil industry first emerged.
OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais made this statement during his speech at the first meeting of the Technical Committee of the OPEC+ Charter of Cooperation held in Baku.
The Secretary General noted that he was delighted to visit Baku again and emphasized the city’s special place in the development of the oil industry. According to him, relations between OPEC and Azerbaijan are at a high level, and this cooperation has been strengthening year by year within the framework of OPEC+ as well as through other partnership mechanisms.
Al Ghais recalled that the world’s first known offshore oil wells were drilled in 1803 in an area close to where the current event is being held. He also stated that the world’s first mechanically drilled oil well was commissioned in Bibiheybat in 1846, the first wooden oil derrick was built in 1871, and the world’s first oil tanker was created in Azerbaijan in 1877.
