Dorin Junghetu: Azerbaijan is a crucial source for Europe’s energy market

JUNE 11, 2026

This was stated by Moldova’s Minister of Energy, Dorin Junghetu, upon returning from a visit to Azerbaijan, as reported by Report’s Eastern Europe bureau.

According to the minister, Moldova is currently undergoing a major transformation aimed at reducing external energy dependence and integrating into the European energy market.

“Moldova is making significant changes to reduce its external energy dependency and move towards the European market. In this market, Azerbaijan is a crucial source. Especially during the meetings held within the forum, we as Moldova paid special attention to this issue and to the topic of energy circulation in the Black Sea basin,” he said.

Junghetu noted that during the visit, meetings were held with Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov and senior representatives of SOCAR. The talks focused on expanding economic and energy cooperation between Moldova and Azerbaijan, including opportunities for collaboration in renewable energy and strategic regional projects.

“We discussed prospects for cooperation with SOCAR on the supply of petroleum products and natural gas to Moldova on competitive terms, as well as the possibility of attracting Azerbaijani investments into Moldova’s energy sector,” the minister added.

Junghetu also emphasised that during the meeting with the Azerbaijani delegation, special attention was paid to regional projects in the field of green energy.

“In this context, we discussed the Azerbaijan–Georgia–Romania–Hungary Green Energy Corridor project, which is intended to transport electricity generated from renewable sources to the European market,” he stressed.

It should be noted that Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, stated during an online speech at the Trans-Caspian Forum that the Middle Corridor gains additional importance amid the intensification of conflict in the Gulf region and the Middle East.
