Minister: Energy line through Zangazur will enhance Türkiye’s regional hub role

MAY 25, 2026

The new power connection through Zangazur will deliver energy resources from the Caspian region to Türkiye via Armenia and Nakhchivan, and this project will further strengthen Türkiye’s position as a regional energy hub, said Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov during a ministerial session on “Energy Security in a Changing Global Landscape: Connectivity and Cooperation” held within the 2nd Istanbul Natural Resources Summit, Report informs, citing the Ministry of Energy.

The minister emphasised that there is a successful model of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye, marked by significant investments in the energy sector and the implementation of various projects involving oil and gas pipelines as well as electricity infrastructure.

He noted that both countries have built their energy development strategies on diversifying sources and routes and on creating broader energy connections. The Baku‑Tbilisi‑Ceyhan pipeline and the Southern Gas Corridor were highlighted as reliable and predictable energy routes. These projects have turned the participant countries, and the region as a whole, into one of the main pillars of Eurasia’s energy infrastructure.

Against the backdrop of recent geopolitical processes affecting energy markets, Shahbazov noted that energy power in the 21st century is no longer measured solely by production, but also by supply security, energy connectivity, and reliable partnership. In this context, the electricity interconnector project between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye, and Bulgaria is currently on the agenda.

He also pointed out that, in light of Uzbekistan’s projects linking it with China, the future formation of new energy connections between China and Europe via Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Central Asia could reshape Eurasia’s energy architecture.

The minister highlighted that e‑mobility, electrification, data centres, artificial intelligence, and other technological developments are rapidly increasing demand for energy and electricity. The key issue now is no longer obtaining energy from the cheapest source, but ensuring its accessibility and secure supply while strengthening international cooperation.

The session was attended by Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, as well as ministers from Georgia, Moldova, Libya, Somalia, Nigeria, and Sudan.
