Azerbaijan has asked the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for help in developing offshore wind energy infrastructure, said Sunniya Durrani-Jamal, Director of the ADB Country Office in Azerbaijan. She made the remarks during a press conference on the ADB's work in Central and West Asia, held on the sidelines of the bank's 59th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors in Samarkand, in response to a question from a Report journalist.
According to her, in the context of Azerbaijan's economic diversification, renewable energy sources have now become a significant part of the country's energy mix. This is particularly important for the ADB in terms of private sector development. Durrani-Jamal noted that the bank has already implemented three solar power projects and now intends to support the government in promoting wind energy. She said that the wind energy potential is currently being assessed, and the bank has received a request for assistance in building offshore wind infrastructure.
At the same time, while paying attention to neighboring countries, especially Georgia, the bank is also exploring the hydrogen sector. She added that the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is very active in this sector in Azerbaijan, making hydrogen another promising energy resource that could be transported via the Caspian and Black Sea cable routes.
