Azerbaijan’s President announced that the country aims to reach 8 gigawatts of combined solar, wind, and hydroelectric capacity by the year 2032

APRIL 23, 2026

Speaking at the Azerbaijan-Latvia Business Forum, President Ilham Aliyev noted that the European Commission consistently refers to Azerbaijan as a trusted energy partner, and this role continues to expand. He explained that while Azerbaijan began with oil exports, it now also supplies natural gas, electricity, and petrochemicals, with plans to export green energy. Renewables are a key part of the country’s investment portfolio, given its substantial solar and wind potential. Major international players have already shown strong interest. According to the President, Azerbaijan’s goal—based not just on ambitions but on signed, legally binding contracts—is to reach 8 gigawatts of combined solar, wind, and hydro power by 2032. He described this target as entirely realistic. The shift to renewables will largely replace natural gas currently used for electricity generation, saving several billion cubic metres of gas for export to international markets where it is now highly sought after.
