President Ilham Aliyev: Electricity Supply in Azerbaijan Covers the Entire Country, We Have Now Entered the Export Stage

JANUARY 13, 2026

Electricity supply in Azerbaijan now fully covers the entire territory of the country, and the country has already become an energy exporter.

President Ilham Aliyev made this statement while speaking at a meeting dedicated to the 2026–2035 State Program for the development of water supply, wastewater, and stormwater systems in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula.

The head of state noted: “We have entered a completely new stage. I touched upon this issue recently at the opening of a new wind power plant. Currently, our energy generation capacity significantly exceeds our domestic demand. We are already exporting electricity. In the past, there were serious problems in this sector, including energy shortages; we were even forced to import electricity from abroad. Now, as a result of the work carried out, generation capacity has been substantially increased — it is currently close to 10,000 megawatts. At the same time, substations, transmission lines, and distribution networks have been integrated into a unified system, and the majority of previous deficiencies have been eliminated.

Today, we have resolved the issue of meeting only our own energy needs; we are now thinking about export opportunities and actively creating them. In a few years, Azerbaijan — just as it currently supplies oil and gas to world markets and contributes to the energy security of a number of countries — will also export electricity to the global market. Intensive negotiations are currently underway with neighboring states and their companies to make this happen.”
