Talks are underway to begin exporting natural gas from Azerbaijan’s Absheron field to Türkiye starting in 2029, Azerbaijani Prime Minister Ali Asadov announced at the 12th meeting of the Azerbaijan–Türkiye Intergovernmental Joint Commission, Report informs.
Asadov highlighted the robust energy partnership agenda, noting that in June Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) acquired a 30% stake in the promising Shafag-Asiman offshore field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.
“We will work together to fully unlock the potential of this field. In addition, negotiations continue on starting gas exports from the Absheron field to Türkiye from 2029. SOCAR, the driving force of our energy cooperation, continues to expand its operations in Türkiye,” the Prime Minister added.
Discovered in the 1960s by Azerbaijani geologists, the Absheron field holds estimated reserves of 350 billion cubic meters of gas. In 2009, a contract was signed between France’s Total and SOCAR for its development. On August 4, 2023, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) acquired a 30% stake, leaving SOCAR and TotalEnergies with 35% each.
