Azerbaijan Unveils Plan to Slash Power Sector Emissions by 2035

DECEMBER 02, 2025

Azerbaijan has outlined an ambitious roadmap in its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) to decarbonize the electricity sector by 2035, Trend reports via Day.Az.

Key measures targeted for 2035 include:

The power sector, which relies heavily on natural gas, remains Azerbaijan’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 21% of the national total in 2022.

The updated NDC emphasizes that substantial potential exists for efficiency gains and wider renewable adoption. Over the past two decades, the sector has already achieved notable emission reductions by switching from fuel oil to natural gas. Unlike many countries, Azerbaijan does not use coal for electricity generation, resulting in a relatively low carbon intensity per kilowatt-hour. Nevertheless, considerable room remains for further improvements in efficiency and accelerated renewable energy deployment.
