Azerbaijan could redirect natural gas saved through renewable energy adoption toward hydrogen production, according to Sandro Museridze, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s (EBRD) Principal Banker for Renewable Energy, speaking at the “Green Energy Week 2025: Azerbaijan and Central Asia” forum in Baku.
Museridze highlighted the EBRD’s support in crafting Azerbaijan’s long-term low-carbon strategy. “By modeling the energy system, we aim to ensure energy security, cut carbon emissions, and promote sustainable growth. With over 80% of Azerbaijan’s current energy capacity tied to oil and gas, integrating just two renewable sources could free up approximately 300,000 cubic meters of gas annually, which could be repurposed for hydrogen production,” he stated.
While acknowledging challenges, Museridze expressed optimism about market adaptation and the critical role of regional cooperation. “The energy system serves not only individual nations but also fosters connectivity across borders,” he noted, emphasizing the broader impact of Azerbaijan’s renewable energy initiatives.
