Azerbaijan and U.S. Explore New Priorities in Energy Partnership

SEPTEMBER 11, 2025

Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov met with Brendan Hanrahan, Senior Bureau Official for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, to discuss advancing bilateral energy cooperation, according to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy.

The meeting highlighted the strategic significance of the August 8 Washington summit between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and U.S. President Donald Trump, which marked a new phase in bilateral and regional relations, particularly in energy collaboration. Discussions focused on key priorities, including expanding energy investments and developing regional infrastructure. The establishment of a Strategic Working Group to draft a Charter of Strategic Partnership between Azerbaijan and the U.S. was also addressed.

The U.S.’s critical role in supporting Azerbaijan’s energy security projects was emphasized, particularly in ensuring sustainable energy supplies to Europe. The talks explored deepening ties with ExxonMobil, a long-term partner in Azerbaijan’s oil and gas sector, through new onshore projects, as well as opportunities in liquefied natural gas (LNG), crude oil, and petroleum product trading with the U.S. via SOCAR Trading.

The meeting also evaluated prospects for hydrocarbon and renewable energy projects, notably green energy corridors linking Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Europe through Nakhchivan, Armenia, the Black Sea, and Georgia, as well as energy connections between Azerbaijan and Central Asia via the Caspian Sea. U.S. companies and investors were invited to participate in these potential initiatives.
