Trans-Adriatic Pipeline Nears Completion of Capacity Expansion for Increased Gas Deliveries

SEPTEMBER 10, 2025

The Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) is in the final stages of work to enable an additional 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas to be transported annually, according to a response from TAP AG to Trend, as cited by Day.Az.

Following the 2021 market test, concluded in January 2023, TAP secured binding bids for 1.2 billion cubic meters per year, paving the way for a capacity expansion set to be operational by January 1, 2026. The project involves installing a new 15 MW compressor unit at the existing compressor station near Kipoi (Alexandroupolis), close to the Greece-Turkey border, alongside infrastructure upgrades. TAP AG emphasized that these efforts are nearing completion to meet the committed capacity increase.

TAP transports natural gas from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz field in the Caspian Sea to Europe. Stretching 877 km, the pipeline connects with the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the Turkey-Greece border in Kipoi, crosses northern Greece, Albania, and the Adriatic Sea, and reaches southern Italy. TAP supports gas deliveries to Southeast Europe through interconnectors, including the Greece-Bulgaria Interconnector (IGB), operational since October 2022, which enhances Bulgaria’s energy security. Exit points in Greece, Albania, and Italy further enable the distribution of Azerbaijani gas to broader European markets.

TAP’s shareholders include BP (20%), SOCAR (20%), Snam (20%), Fluxys (20%), and Enagás (20%).
