Azerbaijan's Competitive Edge in Hydrogen Production: A Green Future

FEBRUARY 24, 2025

Azerbaijan is poised to become a key player in the sustainable energy sector by potentially offering competitive prices for the production of green and blue hydrogen. According to a report by APA-Economics, citing the National Hydrogen Strategy Overview published by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and developed in cooperation with Azerbaijan's Ministry of Energy and Worley Consulting Group Limited, Azerbaijan could match the average production costs of green hydrogen in Europe.

The report details that with the strategic use of Azerbaijan’s renewable resources and the international gas price forecasts, hydrogen production costs could be significantly competitive by the early 2030s. Especially if carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies prove efficient, blue hydrogen may offer the lowest production costs.

Highlighting an environmentally conscious future, the report emphasizes that green hydrogen production using Chinese-made electrolyzers could further reduce costs, opening up export opportunities to Europe. This development aligns with global shifts towards cleaner energy sources, positioning Azerbaijan not only as a contributor to global energy markets but also as a leader in ecological sustainability.
