Azerbaijan to get its first-ever carbon credits for small hydropower plants

JUNE 24, 2024

AzerEnergy OJSC applied to two foreign companies for the purchase of carbon certificates for seven small hydropower plants located in the Kalbajar and Lachin districts.

In early 2024, AzerEnergy, in collaboration with SOCAR Trading, sent requests to the Global Carbon Council located in Qatar and the Gold Standard located in Switzerland in order to obtain carbon certificates for the seven small hydropower plants and thereby ensure participation in the voluntary market for carbon credits.

A preliminary review of the documents for the small hydropower plants in Kalbajar and Lachin was conducted by the above-mentioned institutions, and an on-site audit was scheduled as part of the registration procedure. An audit company was deployed to perform the field audit stage. This stage was carried out by an expert visiting Azerbaijan for three days, starting from June 10.

As a result of the activity of the seven small hydropower stations, the registration procedure of which is ongoing, it is planned to prevent the release of 45,000-50,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere per year.
