BOTAS, Türkmengaz mull supply of Turkmen gas for export to Europe

FEBRUARY 01, 2024

Representatives of the Turkish oil and gas company BOTAS and the Turkmen state corporation Türkmengaz have discussed plans for the delivery of gas from Turkmenistan to Türkiye for its further export to Europe, according to the Sabah newspaper.

The meeting took place at BOTAS headquarters in Ankara.

According to the information, cooperation in this area with Ashgabat is one of the components of Türkiye’s strategic plans to become a regional gas trading hub. It is assumed that Turkmen gas will be delivered to the republic through Azerbaijan, and part of its volumes will then be exported to Europe. A memorandum regarding the development of cooperation in the energy sector was signed between the two countries in December 2022.

The management of BOTAS assured that it is ready to provide any support to the Turkmen side for the implementation of these plans. The first stage of the plan discussed between the parties involves the delivery of Turkmen gas to Türkiye, then in the short term it will be regularly exported to European markets. It is emphasized that the estimated cost of gas from Turkmenistan is more profitable for Türkiye, which will strengthen its position in negotiations with other exporting countries.

The newspaper notes that as part of plans to transform into a major gas export hub, Türkiye, in addition to Russia, plans to receive gas from Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, as well as receive LNG from other countries and export this fuel to Europe.
