North Macedonia to start laying gas pipeline to TAP and LNG terminals in Greece by year-end

NOVEMBER 14, 2023

North Macedonia will begin work before the end of the year on a gas pipeline project that will connect its storage facilities with the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals in Greece, Prime Minister of North Macedonia Dimitar Kovacevski said during the Vienna Economic Forum.

“We are working on strategic projects together with neighboring countries, in particular Greece, and before the end of the year we will start implementing a new pipeline project that will allow North Macedonia to connect to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, the LNG terminals in Revithoussa, as well as the new terminal that will be built in Alexandroupolis, and this will ensure energy independence and diversification of the country’s energy supply sources,” Kovacevski emphasized.

In 2022, construction began on a floating liquefied natural gas terminal in the city of Alexandroupolis. The new terminal should begin operating by the end of 2023, its capacity will be 5.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. The existing terminal on the island of Revithoussa is located west of Athens.

On December 31, 2020, Azerbaijan began commercial gas supplies to Europe via the TAP, which is an integral part of the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC). Supplies designed for 25 years provide for annual exports of more than 10 billion cubic meters of gas to the European market, of which 8 billion cubic meters account for Italy, 1 billion cubic meters each for Greece and Bulgaria.
