OCTOBER 06, 2023

Türkiye expects that the first unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant being built by Rosatom will begin generating electricity at the end of October 2024, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said in an interview with NTV channel on October 5.

“We have set a goal to launch the first unit by the 101st anniversary of the Turkish Republic, October 29, 2024. As many as 30,000 specialists work here, bringing this goal closer. This is an extremely important moment, we will fulfill a dream that is already 70 years old, thereby the country will receive nuclear energy,” he noted.

He added that the authorities plan to launch all four units of Akkuyu, as well as the construction of nuclear power plants in Sinop and in the west of the country; in addition, it is planned to launch small modular reactors.

Akkuyu power plant is the first project in the global nuclear industry to be implemented according to the “build-own-operate” model. The project cost is about $20 billion. It is planned that after the commissioning of four power units with a capacity of 1,200 MW, each plant will generate about 35 billion kilowatt-hours per year and cover up to 10% of Türkiye’s electricity needs.
