EU calls on Armenia to join electricity cable project from Azerbaijan to Romania

OCTOBER 06, 2023

The European Commission has called on Armenia to join the Black Sea electricity cable project with Azerbaijan, Georgia, Hungary and Romania, according to a joint statement signed by results of the meeting between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the European Political Community summit in Granada, according to Report.

"The Commission will support Armenia's participation in regional projects, in particular in the Black Sea electricity cable project with Azerbaijan, Georgia, Hungary and Romania," the statement says.

The commission also pledged to boost technical assistance to Armenia in air and nuclear safety.

The European Commission approved the 3 GW Black Sea electricity cable project in 2022. It provides for the creation of a direct underwater power distribution line from Azerbaijan via Georgia and Black Sea to Romania and other EU countries. It is seen as one of the ways to compensate for losses from the severance of the EU’s energy relations with Russia and at the same time as a way to counter China's Belt, Road initiative.
