Péter Szijjártó: Central Europe wants to buy natural gas from Azerbaijan, Qatar and Türkiye

SEPTEMBER 07, 2023

Central Europe wants to buy natural gas from Azerbaijan, Qatar, Türkiye and other countries, but for this, it is necessary to develop the energy infrastructure of Southeast Europe, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said at the economic forum in Poland.

He noted that the current realities and infrastructure determine Hungary's energy supply: “The European Union should provide financial support for the creation of alternative energy routes. The only alternative route to date is the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.”

The foreign minister said that Hungary is trying to diversify its natural gas supplies, but the potentials of the energy infrastructure of South-East Europe are very limited, and the EU does not want to finance development in this direction.

Hungary plans to purchase 1 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Azerbaijan to diversify sources of supply. Péter Szijjártó called on the European Union to allocate funds to expand the capacity of pipelines through which Azerbaijani natural gas can be supplied to Romania and Hungary.
