Azerbaijan strengthening role as key player in energy diversification efforts

AUGUST 04, 2023

The implementation of the project for the transportation of green energy from the Caspian region to Europe, for which a joint venture will be created between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary, will contribute to improving regional and even global energy security, Romanian expert, analyst, director of Smartlink Communications Radu Magdin.

“Because the joint venture aims to supply green electricity via a submarine cable connecting Azerbaijan through Georgia to Romania and Hungary, this project is in line with the EU’s broad strategy, which aims to create more sustainable links between Europe and other regions,” he said.

He noted that Azerbaijan, as a major participant in this initiative, can strengthen its role as a key player in efforts to diversify energy and increase resilience in Europe.

“One of the most notable aspects of this project is its contribution to the provision of sustainable energy and alternative energy routes for Azerbaijan,” he noted, adding that this allows Azerbaijan to expand its role as an electricity supplier and contributes to greater integration among the Caspian region, the Black Sea and the countries - EU members.

“This integration is crucial to reduce the EU’s dependence on a single source or supplier of energy,” he said.

He noted that the new initiative is not only a corridor for ensuring energy sustainability, but also an investment of confidence in Azerbaijan in terms of promoting broader European sustainability and diversifying energy supplies.

“This mutually beneficial relationship strengthens much-needed integration,” he said.

In general, the green energy transportation project is a win-win for both Azerbaijan and the EU, according to the expert.
