Georgian minister: Dependence on energy imports can threaten economy

MARCH 09, 2021

Heavy dependence on electricity imports can pose a threat to the Georgian economy, Report's Georgian Service informs, citing Natia Turnava, the country's Economy and Sustainable Development Minister.

"Heavy dependence on imports means that Georgia will rely on the will of its neighboring countries. For example, the electricity prices for the population and local consumers will depend not on our decisions but on neighboring countries' economic situation and energy policy," the minister said at a parliamentary committee meeting.

The meeting participants discussed the project for the construction of the Namakhvan hydroelectric power station. Georgia is experiencing serious tension over the project, as local residents and environmentalists are against the construction.
