APRIL 19, 2023

The capacity of the Shymkent oil refinery will be increased to 12 million tons per year, Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov said at an expanded meeting on the socio-economic development of the country.

"To cover the shortage of fuel and lubricants in the domestic market, it is planned to expand the capacity of the Shymkent refinery from 6 to 12 million tons per year. To load it with raw materials, it is planned to implement projects to expand the Atyrau-Kenkiyak and Kenkiyak-Kumkol oil pipelines," the prime minister explained.

He added that the construction of a new gas processing plant in Zhanaozen with a capacity of 900 million cubic meters will be launched this year.

"In general, legislative norms have been adopted in the gas sector, which will make it possible to obtain an additional 4 billion cubic meters of commercial gas per year," Smailov said.

The head of government also recalled that a project is being implemented to produce butadiene and its derivatives with a capacity of 319,000 tons per year.

"The design of a complex for the production of polyethylene with a capacity of 1.2 million tons per year is underway. The total investment will amount to $8.7 billion," he concluded.
