Draghi emphasizes Azerbaijan's role in providing Italy with natural gas

AUGUST 25, 2022

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi stressed the importance of Azerbaijan in providing his country with natural gas, Report informs via Italian media.

“We signed new contracts to increase gas supplies from a number of countries around the world, including Azerbaijan and Algeria. Last year, 40 percent of our natural gas imports came from Russia. This year, this figure has halved on average,” Mario Draghi said.

The Italian prime minister emphasized the acceleration in the development of renewable energy sources. According to him, the demand for renewable energy for eight months of 2022 is almost four times higher than in 2020 and 2021 combined.

Mario Draghi promised that by the fall of 2024, Italy would be completely independent of Russian gas supplies.

“This is the main goal in terms of national security. Natural gas is a geopolitical weapon used by Russia against Ukraine and its European allies,” he added.
