Azerbaijan and Turkiye may be alternatives to Russia in electricity exports to Georgia

APRIL 22, 2022

“Any sanctions on import of electricity from Russia will not pose a threat on Georgia since it has alternative sources from Azerbaijan and Turkiye,” Davit Narmania, Chairman at the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission (GNERC), said, Report informs.

According to him, Georgia imported a large volume of electricity in March: “However, we are entering a phase that there will not be a need for electricity imports. Hydropower plants will generate enough power to meet domestic needs. Along with this, we’ll be able to export electricity in the near future.”

In the first quarter of 2022, Georgia imported 119.2 million kWh of electricity, down 74.2% or 3.8-fold from the previous year.

In the reporting period, Georgia imported 1,094.4 million kWh in total. Of this, 836.8 million kWh fell to the share of Russia.
