Experts from Azerbaijan attending consultations on International Energy Charter

APRIL 19, 2022

Experts from the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry and SOCAR will take part in multilateral consultations on improving the International Energy Charter agreement in Brussels, Report informs.

The 12th round of such consultations will be held in Brussels on April 19-22. They are designed to modernize the treaty ahead of a special High-Level Conference on the International Energy Charter, which will be held in June 2022.

“Fifty delegations, including those from Azerbaijan, are participating in the April face-to-face meeting (the previous ones were held monthly via videoconferencing). The topic of the April consultations is the protection of investments for hydrocarbon projects, the security of such projects, the issues of transit (transit commitments) of hydrocarbons and access to the relevant infrastructure,” a member of the Azerbaijani delegation told Report before leaving for Brussels.

Earlier this year, during similar consultations of working groups on improving the Energy Charter Treaty, issues of granting privileges in the exchange of energy resources and refusal for them were discussed, the regimes of “fair and equitable treatment”, “most favored nation”, the term “economic activity in the energy sector”, tariff issues were clarified.

The final round of consultations before the June summit on the improvement of the Energy Charter Treaty will take place on May 17-20.

Azerbaijan has been cooperating with the International Energy Charter since 1994, and in 2019 officially acceded to it by signing the Hague Document II.

This integration is important for the country in order to unify the legislative and procedural norms for the development of the fuel and energy complex in accordance with modern world standards.
